Common Diesel Problems

And how to solve them

If you’re like most diesel vehicle owners, your car/truck runs much more smoothly than its gas-powered counterparts, rarely needing repair. However, there are a few common problems which occasionally plague diesel vehicles.

Here are the issues to watch out for;

Black Exhaust

Fortunately, diesel engines do not give off black exhaust as frequently as they used to. However, it can still happen if your air/fuel ratio is off-balance. This could be due to many possible issues, including a broken injector/injector pump, a broken EGR valve, a clogged air filter or a problem with the turbocharger.

Glow Plug Failure

Diesel engines are notorious for their dislike of the cold. Glow plugs resemble spark plugs in your vehicle’s combustion chamber or pre-chamber and work like tiny heaters to get your diesel engine started in cold weather. These glow plugs do wear out over time.

Hard Starting

Diesel fuel has a much higher viscosity than gasoline. That viscosity can lead to hard starting. There may also be low engine compression or issues with the fuel delivery. It’s best to consult a certified diesel mechanic if you notice a problem with hard starting.

Loud Noises

While diesel engines are typically louder than gasoline-powered vehicles, certain types of noise are a red flag. Unusual noises can be a sign of problems with the fuel system. It may be that your fuel injectors are clogged. If this is the case, you will need a trustworthy diesel mechanic to fix it for you.

Oxidation of the Oil

If you don’t drive your diesel vehicle often, the oil may oxidize, bubbling up with air. If this happens, the oil isn’t providing the right amount of lubrication to the engine. This can also happen if too much air is introduced into the system.
