How Often Should You Change the Oil In Your Diesel?

If you’ve been a driver for any length of time, you already know the standard wisdom around oil changes. Most vehicles need an oil change every three months or every 3000 miles, and the process is simple enough, that you can probably do it on your own. But when it comes to your diesel truck, it’s a little different.

Here is what you need to know about changing the oil on your diesel vehicle.

Oil Change Frequency

Unlike your other vehicles, the answer to how frequently the oil should be changed on your diesel truck depends on a number of factors. In general, you can go much longer without an oil change on a diesel than with other vehicles. But there are a few things to keep in mind.

For example, what kind of terrain do you typically drive on? What kind of oil do you use? And do you use your diesel truck for towing or hauling, or just to drive around town?

Also keep in mind your driving habits. If you frequently drive on the highway, you may not need your oil changed very often. But if you take shorter trips on city streets or rural roads, it’s different. That’s because driving at a lower speed can cause buildup which contaminates your oil more easily.

A good rule of thumb is to get an oil change every 5000-7000 miles or every six months. If you never do any towing, you can go even longer. However, if you often tow heavy loads with your vehicle, plan on more frequent oil changes.

It’s always a good idea to refer to your vehicle’s owner’s manual if you’re unsure about how often it needs an oil change. And of course, always reach out to All In The Wrist Auto Repair for help with scheduling your next oil change.
